Unrestricted Internet Access at Work or School

I have been asked a few times what is so great about SSH or what can it do for me. The easiest answer I could come up with to tell non techies, was you can surf pr0n at work and you might not get fired. Although I wouldn't recommend doing this, using SSH to circumvent a corporate firewall can be useful at times if you need to get to that one blocked website for whatever reason. Configuring an SSH server for this purpose is not that hard if you have an old pc, high speed Internet connection, and know how to install Linux. This guide is meant to be easy to follow instructions that will have you up and surfing using an unrestricted connection in the next 5 mins.

Step 1:

Create a free shell account there are many free websites that provide this service but I chose to pay a buck to use one that I know well and will always be available when I need it http://www.silenceisdefeat.org it only costs a buck(Paypal) to verify your identity. Silenceisdefeat allows you to SSH Tunneling to be done through the following ports 22/80/443. At some freeshell hosts you must create the tunnel yourself, I choose one that is already setup for this purpose.

Step 2: Download putty.exe and activate SSH Tunnel

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

a. Configure Tunnel goto Connection-->SSH --> Tunnels

b.Check Local ports, Change source port to 443, and select Destination as Dynamic

c. Enter Host Name = ssh.silenceisdefeat.org and Port =22 d. Select Open to start the connection

Step 3: Setup Proxy Connection for Internet Explorer

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

a. Tools-->Options-->Connection Tab b. Check the use proxy box then select the advanced tab c. On the Socks Block enter 127.0.0.1 with the Port 443

d. Test Browser and Surf

Tip: You may wish to get a privacy filter to keep nosey people from seeing what your up to.
